How Forex Bonuses Work: Withdrawal Conditions Explained

Updated 30 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Guides Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

Most forex bonuses are trading credit, not cash: they add margin so you can hold positions longer, but the bonus itself can't be withdrawn. Profits made while using it usually can. The main traps are rules that remove some or all of the bonus when you withdraw, volume requirements, bans on cross-account hedging, and bonus credit that can't be moved between accounts. Read the terms before you deposit.

How a deposit bonus works: Deposit $500 + Bonus credit $500 = Trading balance $1,000. Withdrawable: Deposit; Not withdrawable: Bonus credit.
You trade with your deposit plus the bonus, but only your deposit and profits can be withdrawn. The bonus itself can’t be, and withdrawing may reduce or remove it. Check each broker’s terms.

How a deposit bonus works: worked example

You deposit $500 and get a 100% bonus: balance $500, credit $500, equity $1,000.

  • It helps margin. With $1,000 equity you can survive a larger drawdown before the stop out.
  • You make $300 profit. Equity is now $1,300; your cash balance is $800.
  • You withdraw $300. Depending on the broker, the bonus may be untouched, cut proportionally (e.g. $300 ÷ $800 = 37.5% of the credit, so $187.50 removed), or removed entirely. Read which rule applies before you withdraw.
  • You lose $500. Your own money is gone. Most brokers then remove the bonus too, and the account is at zero.

The conditions that cause trouble

  1. Withdrawal removes the bonus. The most common surprise. Plan withdrawals when you have no open positions relying on bonus margin.
  2. Hedging across accounts. Using a bonus account against another account or broker is treated as abuse; profits can be cancelled. See hedging rules.
  3. Internal transfers. Moving funds between accounts can forfeit the bonus.
  4. Account type. Bonuses usually apply only to standard accounts, not ECN.
  5. Region. Your country may be excluded. EU rules restrict trading incentives under ESMA’s measures.
  6. Expiry and inactivity. Unused credit may expire.

Is a bonus worth it?

It’s worth having if you’d deposit anyway and you understand the withdrawal rule. It isn’t worth choosing a broker for. A bonus never compensates for a weak licence or poor withdrawal record: check why brokers reject withdrawals before you chase one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw a forex bonus?

Usually not. XM Global, for example, states its bonuses are not withdrawable, but profits made while trading with them are.

What happens to my bonus when I withdraw?

At many brokers, withdrawing any money removes all or a proportional part of the bonus. If that bonus was supporting open positions, your margin level can drop sharply.

Does bonus credit protect me from a stop out?

It counts towards equity at many brokers, so it delays the stop out. It doesn't absorb losses forever; once your own funds are gone, the bonus usually goes with them.

Are bonuses available everywhere?

No. EU rules restrict incentives to trade CFDs, and offshore brokers vary offers by country. XM Global and FXGT both say availability depends on your region.
