Forex Leverage Explained With Worked Examples

Updated 30 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Guides Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

Leverage lets you hold a position larger than your deposit: at 100:1, $1,000 of margin controls $100,000. Required margin = position size ÷ leverage. Leverage does not change your profit or loss per pip; position size does. Higher leverage only lowers the margin you lock up, which lets a small account open larger trades and be wiped out faster.

Margin needed to open 1 lot: 1:25 $4,400, 1:100 $1,100, 1:500 $220, 1:1,000 $110
EUR/USD at 1.10. Higher leverage lets you open the same 1 lot with less margin; the profit or loss per pip stays the same.

The formula

Required margin = position size (in account currency) ÷ leverage

One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. For EUR/USD at 1.0800, one lot is worth $108,000.

Leverage Margin for 1 lot EUR/USD at 1.0800 Margin for 0.1 lot
30:1 $3,600 $360
100:1 $1,080 $108
500:1 $216 $21.60
1000:1 $108 $10.80

Use the margin calculator for other pairs and account currencies.

What leverage doesn’t change

A one-pip move on 1 lot of EUR/USD is worth $10 whether you use 30:1 or 1000:1. Leverage changes only how much of your balance is locked as margin, and therefore how many lots you could open. See what a pip is worth.

Worked example: same trade, different account sizes

You have $500 and buy 0.5 lots of EUR/USD at 1.0800 ($54,000 position).

  • At 100:1, margin is $540. You can’t open it.
  • At 1000:1, margin is $54. You can open it, and $446 of free margin remains.

Each pip is now worth $5. A 50-pip move against you costs $250, half your account. A 90-pip move takes your equity close to zero. The high leverage made the trade possible; the position size made it dangerous. A safer size for $500 is closer to 0.05 lots, where 50 pips costs $25. The lot calculator works this out from your stop-loss.

Effective leverage: the number that matters

Effective leverage = total position value ÷ equity. In the example above, $54,000 ÷ $500 = 108:1, even though the account allowed 1000:1. Keeping effective leverage low is what protects you, whatever the broker’s maximum.

Leverage limits by broker and instrument

Maximum leverage is rarely flat. From brokers’ own pages:

  • XM Global: up to 1000:1, and XM says it keeps that level during major news.
  • Titan FX: 1000:1 on Zero Micro, 500:1 on Standard and Blade for major FX, 100:1 fixed on BTC/USD.
  • BigBoss: up to 2222:1, falling as your balance grows, with fixed lower limits on exotics, indices, commodities, crypto and stocks.
  • XS.com: dynamic leverage, up to 2000:1 on accounts with a $500 minimum.

For regulated brokers, retail leverage is capped by law, at 30:1 on major pairs in the EU under ESMA’s measures.

What happens when it goes wrong

As losses grow, your margin level falls. At the broker’s margin call level you get a warning; at the stop-out level positions are closed automatically. With negative balance protection, a fast gap can’t leave you owing money. Read margin level, margin call and stop out and, for a full method, risk management with high leverage. Frequently asked questions

Is higher leverage more risky?

Leverage itself only sets how much margin a trade needs. The risk comes from the bigger positions it allows. A 0.01-lot trade risks the same per pip at 30:1 or 1000:1.

What leverage should a beginner use?

Choose position size first, from the amount you can lose on the trade. Then any leverage that covers the margin is enough. High maximum leverage mainly helps keep free margin available.

Why does my broker lower my leverage?

Many offshore brokers reduce leverage as your balance or position size grows, or on certain instruments and around news. BigBoss and XS.com both publish balance- or size-based leverage rules.

What is the maximum leverage in the EU?

30:1 on major currency pairs for retail clients, 20:1 on gold and major indices, and 2:1 on crypto, under ESMA's measures.
