What Is Offshore Forex Trading? How It Works and Who It's For

Updated 30 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Guides Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

Offshore forex means trading CFDs with a broker licensed in a smaller financial centre such as Belize, Seychelles, Mauritius or Vanuatu instead of under your home regulator. You get far higher leverage (1000:1 or more, against 30:1 on major pairs for EU retail clients), bonuses and negative balance protection, but much weaker supervision and usually no compensation scheme. It suits experienced traders with small, risk-only capital, not savings.

What “offshore” actually means

A forex broker needs a licence from the country where it is based. Most large brands run several companies: one licensed in the UK, EU or Australia for local clients, and one licensed in an offshore centre for everyone else. When you open an account from a country the brand doesn’t serve locally, you usually sign up with the offshore company.

Some examples from our database, all checked against the brokers’ own sites:

Broker Company serving international clients Regulator and licence
XM Global XM Global Limited FSC Belize, 8557558
Titan FX Titan FX Limited Vanuatu FSC, 40313
FXGT GT Global Ltd Seychelles FSA, SD019

The brand name is the same around the world, but the legal entity and the rules are not. That is the single most important thing to understand about offshore trading.

How it differs from trading with a regulated broker

Top-tier regulated (e.g. EU) Offshore
Max leverage on major FX (retail) 30:1 1000:1 or more
Bonuses Restricted Common
Negative balance protection Required Broker’s choice; many offer it
Compensation if the broker fails Yes, e.g. €20,000 in Cyprus, £85,000 in the UK Usually none
Supervision Strict, frequent reporting Lighter

The EU limits come from ESMA’s product intervention measures: 30:1 on major pairs down to 2:1 on crypto, a margin close-out at 50% of required margin, and negative balance protection per account. The UK figure is from the FSCS and the Cyprus figure from CySEC’s Investor Compensation Fund page. For the full comparison, read regulated vs offshore brokers.

What you get

  • Leverage. With 1000:1, a $100 margin holds a $100,000 position. That makes small accounts workable, and it makes them easy to wipe out. See leverage explained.
  • Low entry. XM Global’s minimum deposit is $5; Titan FX’s Zero Micro account has no minimum.
  • Bonuses. Deposit bonuses are common offshore. They are extra margin, not cash: read how bonuses work.
  • Product range. Many offshore brokers put forex, gold, indices, crypto and stock CFDs in one account.

What you give up

  • A compensation scheme. If the broker fails, there is usually nothing behind your balance except the broker’s own assets. See what happens if a broker goes bust.
  • Strong supervision. Offshore regulators license and register firms, but their oversight is lighter. Our licence tier guide explains the differences.
  • An easy route to complain. Disputes are handled under the broker’s home jurisdiction.

Who it suits

Offshore trading makes sense if you understand leverage, size positions from the loss you can accept, and only deposit money you can afford to lose. It doesn’t suit savings, emergency money or anyone who wants a guarantee. Frequently asked questions

Is offshore forex trading legal?

That depends on where you live, not on the broker. Some countries restrict or ban dealing with brokers that aren't licensed locally. Check your own regulator's rules before you open an account.

Why do people use offshore brokers?

Mainly for leverage. EU rules cap retail leverage at 30:1 on major currency pairs, while offshore brokers such as XM Global offer up to 1000:1 and FXGT up to 5000:1. Bonuses and very low minimum deposits are the other draws.

Is my money protected with an offshore broker?

Less than with a top-tier broker. The UK's FSCS covers up to £85,000 and Cyprus's fund up to €20,000 if a firm fails; we found no comparable scheme described by the offshore regulators we checked.

Can I lose more than I deposit?

Not if the broker offers negative balance protection and applies it. XM Global says all its accounts have it. Always check the broker's own terms.
