Hedging Rules at Forex Brokers

Short answer

Hedging in one account (holding a buy and a sell on the same pair) is allowed at most offshore brokers, including XM Global and Titan FX. What brokers prohibit is hedging across accounts or across brokers to exploit bonuses or negative balance protection; that can lead to cancelled profits and closed accounts. MT5 accounts must be set to hedging mode, not netting, to hold opposite positions.

What hedging means at a broker

Same-account hedging: you hold, for example, 1 lot buy and 1 lot sell on EUR/USD in the same account. Your net exposure is zero. Most offshore brokers allow it:

  • XM Global lists hedging on every account.
  • Titan FX says all strategies are allowed, including hedging, scalping and EAs.

Cross-account or cross-broker hedging: opposite positions in two accounts, either at the same broker or at different ones. Brokers prohibit this when it’s used to exploit something, usually:

  • a deposit bonus (lose the bonus account, profit on the other), or
  • negative balance protection (one account goes negative and is reset to zero, the other keeps the profit).

Consequences in brokers’ terms typically include voiding profits, removing bonuses and closing accounts. This is one of the most common causes of withdrawal refusals.

Platform: MT5 hedging vs netting

MetaTrader 5 supports both “the traditional netting system and the hedging option system”, according to MetaQuotes. In a netting account you can’t hold a buy and a sell on the same symbol; a sell order just reduces your buy. If you want to hedge on MT5, open a hedging-mode account. MT4 always allows separate positions. More in MT4 vs MT5.

The cost of a hedge

Suppose you hold 1 lot of EUR/USD long, it’s 40 pips down, and you open 1 lot short to “freeze” it:

  • You pay the spread again on the new trade (e.g. 1.2 pips = $12).
  • You pay swap on both legs every night, usually a net cost (swap explained).
  • When you unwind, you pay spread once more on whichever leg you close first.

The −$400 is locked in, not avoided. Margin on hedged positions is often reduced (many brokers charge margin only on the larger side), but that varies by broker.

Safe practice

  • Hedge within one account if you need to; don’t spread opposite positions across accounts.
  • Read the “abusive trading” section of your client agreement, especially if you have a bonus.
  • If you want a broker with no strategy restrictions beyond abuse, see scalping brokers and our bonus rules guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is hedging allowed at XM?

Yes. XM Global lists hedging on all its account types. Like most brokers, it restricts strategies that abuse bonuses or negative balance protection.

Why is cross-account hedging banned?

With negative balance protection, a trader could hold a buy at one broker and a sell at another, hoping one side wipes out and is reset to zero while the other profits. Brokers treat this as abuse.

Does hedging remove risk?

A perfect hedge locks in your current profit or loss, but you still pay the spread twice and swap on both legs. It delays a decision rather than removing risk.

What is the difference between MT5 hedging and netting?

In netting mode, a new opposite order reduces or reverses your existing position. In hedging mode, each order is a separate position, so you can hold a buy and a sell together.
