Negative Balance Protection Explained

Updated 30 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Guides Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

Negative balance protection (often called zero-cut) means that if a fast market move takes your account below zero, the broker resets your balance to zero instead of asking you to pay the deficit. It is mandatory for retail CFD clients in the EU. Offshore it is the broker's own policy: XM Global says all its accounts have it, but you should check the terms of every broker you use.

Zero-cut: negative balance protection: Balance $1,000, Price gap: $1,300 loss. Without protection: Balance −$300: you owe it. With zero-cut: Reset to $0: the broker covers it.
When a fast market jumps past the stop-out and the balance goes negative, a broker with zero-cut writes off the negative amount instead of asking you to pay it.

How an account goes below zero

Your broker closes positions when your margin level hits its stop-out level. Normally that leaves some equity. But stop out executes at the next available price, and markets sometimes jump:

  • Monday open after weekend news
  • Central bank surprises and major data releases (news trading)
  • Thin liquidity in exotic pairs or crypto

Example. You hold 1 lot of USD/JPY with $500 of equity. Each pip is worth roughly $6.70 at 150.00. The market gaps 150 pips against you at the open. The loss is about $1,000, so the account ends at about −$500.

  • Without protection, you owe the broker $500.
  • With protection, the broker absorbs it and your balance returns to $0.

Where it is required

In the EU, negative balance protection per account is one of ESMA’s CFD measures for retail clients. Offshore regulators don’t generally impose it, so it comes down to each broker’s client agreement.

Fine print to look for

  • Abuse clauses. Brokers often exclude clients who hedge across accounts or brokers to exploit the reset. Read the hedging rules.
  • Timing. Some brokers reset automatically, others after you contact support.
  • Bonus credit. A deficit may be absorbed by bonus credit before the reset. See how bonuses work.

What it doesn’t replace

Negative balance protection is a last line of defence. It does nothing for the money already in your account. Keep effective leverage low and understand margin call and stop out before you trade around gaps.

Frequently asked questions

How can an account go negative if there's a stop out?

Stop out closes positions at the next available price. If the market gaps, for example over a weekend or on a surprise announcement, that price can be far beyond the stop-out level, leaving a loss bigger than your equity.

Does negative balance protection stop me losing my deposit?

No. It only stops losses going beyond your deposit. You can still lose everything in the account.

Do all offshore brokers offer it?

No. It isn't required offshore. XM Global states it on its account page. For Titan FX we could not find a statement on the pages we checked.

Does the protection apply per account or across all accounts?

That depends on the broker. EU rules apply it per account. Some brokers may offset a negative balance against your other accounts or bonus credit, so read the terms.
