What to check

  1. Exclusions: some brokers won’t reset balances created by abusive strategies or combined with certain bonuses.
  2. Stop-out comes first: protection is the last line; your positions are normally closed at the stop-out level before that. See margin level.
  3. Policy vs regulation: offshore, protection is usually the broker’s own policy. An offshore licence gives supervision and a complaints route, not a compensation scheme. Compare licences on the safest brokers page.

Our negative balance protection guide explains it in detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is negative balance protection?

If a sharp move pushes your balance below zero, the broker absorbs the deficit and resets it to zero, so you never owe more than you deposited.

Are there cases where it doesn't apply?

Some brokers exclude abuse, such as hedging across accounts or brokers to exploit the reset. Read the terms.

Is it guaranteed by the regulator?

At offshore brokers it's usually a company policy, not a regulatory guarantee, so read the broker's terms for how and when it applies.

How does negative balance protection work in practice?

If a fast market move closes your positions below zero, the broker resets your balance to zero instead of asking you to repay the deficit. Some brokers do this automatically, others on request, so check the timing and any conditions in the terms.
