The short answer
FXGT wins on leverage and product range; XM wins on simplicity and a $5 start. The deciding question is whether you actually need more than 1000:1.
1. Leverage
FXGT’s homepage shows two headline conditions: 5000:1 with a $100 minimum balance and 1000:1 with a $0 minimum. XM Global offers up to 1000:1 and says it keeps that level during major news.
5000:1 is a ceiling, not a target. At that level $100 of margin controls a $500,000 position. If you would size trades the same way at either broker, the extra leverage changes little. Compare more options on high-leverage brokers and work out margin with the margin calculator.
2. Accounts
XM Global has three accounts: Standard, Ultra Low (both $5 minimum) and Shares ($10,000, for buying actual shares). FXGT lists five: Standard, Optimus, Low Spread, Mini and ECN Zero. If you want an ECN-style account, FXGT has one by name. FXGT also notes that account types and conditions vary by country, so what you’re offered at sign-up is what counts.
3. Bonus
XM Global offers a 100% deposit bonus that works as extra margin; the bonus itself can’t be withdrawn. FXGT pays a 25% loyalty bonus on every deposit, up to $10,000, on Mini and Standard+ accounts (ECN Zero, PRO and Optimus don’t qualify); it’s also credit, not cash. See XM bonus and the bonus comparison.
4. Licence and negative balance protection
XM Global Limited: FSC Belize, licence 8557558. FXGT’s retail clients: GT Global Ltd, Seychelles FSA, licence SD019; the group also has South African (FSCA) and Vanuatu (VFSC) companies. Both retail licences are offshore: real supervision, but without the compensation schemes and client protections of EU, UK or Australian regulators.
Both apply negative balance protection: XM Global on all accounts, FXGT as stated on its security-of-funds page. Both stop out at 20%. More: zero-cut brokers.
5. Products
Both offer crypto and stock products and copy trading. FXGT puts forex, crypto CFDs and stock CFDs under one login, and also confirms a swap-free option; XM Global offers an Islamic (swap-free) option on every account.
Verdict by trader type
- Wants maximum leverage on a small balance: FXGT
- Wants an ECN account: FXGT
- Wants the simplest line-up with a bonus: XM
- First offshore account: XM
- Wants a bonus on every deposit: FXGT
Frequently asked questions
Is FXGT's 5000:1 better than XM's 1000:1?
Only if you need it. FXGT's 5000:1 applies to an account with a $100 minimum balance. At that level a 0.02% move against a fully leveraged position wipes out your margin, so most traders won't use the full amount.
Which has a bonus, XM or FXGT?
Both. XM Global offers a 100% deposit bonus. FXGT pays a 25% loyalty bonus on every deposit, up to $10,000, on its Mini and Standard+ accounts.
Does XM have an ECN account like FXGT?
XM Global's accounts are Standard, Ultra Low and Shares; it does not label one as ECN. FXGT's ECN Zero account is its ECN option.
Who regulates XM and FXGT?
XM Global Limited holds an FSC Belize licence (8557558). FXGT's retail company, GT Global Ltd, is licensed by the Seychelles FSA (SD019). Both are offshore licences.
