XM Leverage: Maximum Ratio and the Rules That Limit It

Updated 30 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Broker Reviews Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

XM Global offers leverage up to 1,000:1 on Standard and Ultra Low accounts, but it steps down as your equity grows: 1,000:1 up to $40,000, 500:1 to $80,000, 200:1 to $200,000 and 100:1 above that. XM says it doesn't cut leverage around news such as the US jobs report. Stop-out is at a 20% margin level, and you can change leverage yourself at any time.

Margin needed to open 1 lot: 1:25 $4,400, 1:100 $1,100, 1:500 $220, 1:1,000 $110
At XM's maximum leverage of 1:1,000, 1 lot of EUR/USD needs about $110 of margin (at 1.10). Leverage changes the margin you need, not the profit or loss per pip.

Leverage limits by equity

XM’s help centre says leverage depends on your account’s total equity:

Account equity Maximum leverage
$5 – $40,000 1000:1
$40,001 – $80,000 500:1
$80,001 – $200,000 200:1
Over $200,000 100:1

Limits by account

Account Maximum leverage Stop-out
Standard 1000:1 20%
Ultra Low 1000:1 20%
Shares 1:1 0%

XM’s public pages don’t publish a per-instrument leverage table for XM Global. Some instruments (for example shares or crypto) may have lower limits in the platform’s contract specifications, so check the symbol’s margin requirement in MT4/MT5 before trading it.

XM’s “stable leverage” claim

XM’s stable leverage page says your leverage stays at up to 1,000:1 during volatile events like non-farm payrolls, and contrasts this with other brokers that “usually” cut to around 200:1. That is XM’s own marketing comparison, not an independent test.

Margin example

Margin required = trade size × price ÷ leverage.

  • 1 standard lot of EUR/USD (100,000 euros) at 1.1000 is $110,000 of exposure.
  • At 1,000:1 the margin is $110; at 500:1 it is $220; at 100:1 it is $1,100.

At 1000:1, a move of about 0.1% against a fully margined position wipes out the margin. Check your numbers with the margin calculator, and read how margin level and stop-out work.

Changing your leverage

  1. Log in.
  2. Click your account balance to open the accounts list.
  3. Select the account and click Manage.
  4. Choose Change Leverage, select the level and save. XM says it applies instantly.

Protection on the downside

XM says all accounts have negative balance protection, so a gap past your stop-out can’t leave you owing money. See is XM safe?.
