Starting Forex With $100: Lot Sizes and Risk
With $100, trade 0.01 lots (or smaller on a cent account) and risk no more than $1–3 per trade. On EUR/USD, 0.01 lots is $0.10 per pip, so a 20-pip stop risks $2. High leverage lets a small account open trades, but it doesn't make larger trades safe: at 0.10 lots a 100-pip move wipes out the whole $100. Brokers with low or no minimum deposits make this practical.
The numbers on $100
EUR/USD at 1.0800, $0.10 per pip at 0.01 lots:
| Lots | Per pip | 20-pip stop risks | % of $100 | Pips to lose $100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 | $0.10 | $2 | 2% | 1,000 |
| 0.03 | $0.30 | $6 | 6% | ~333 |
| 0.05 | $0.50 | $10 | 10% | 200 |
| 0.10 | $1.00 | $20 | 20% | 100 |
A 100-pip move happens in EUR/USD within days. At 0.10 lots that’s the account. At 0.01 lots it’s $10.

Margin is not the constraint
0.01 lots of EUR/USD is a $1,080 position. Margin:
- 30:1 → $36
- 500:1 → $2.16
- 1000:1 → $1.08
Even at modest leverage, a $100 account can open 0.01 lots. The temptation with 1000:1 is to open 0.20 or 0.50 lots because the margin allows it. That’s the most common way small accounts disappear. See leverage explained.
Cent accounts
On a cent account your $100 shows as 10,000 cents, and a “0.01 lot” is a hundredth of a normal one. That lets you trade at $0.001 per pip, useful for learning with real execution. XS.com has a cent account; Titan FX’s Zero Micro trades down to 100 units. Compare on cent account brokers.

A plan for the first $100
- Trade one major pair (EUR/USD) at 0.01 lots.
- Risk 1–2% per trade; always set a stop-loss.
- Stop for the day after two losses.
- Keep a log: entry reason, stop, result.
- Withdraw a small amount early to confirm the broker pays (withdrawal problems).
Bonuses can add margin to a small account, but read the bonus rules first.

Frequently asked questions
Can you really start forex with $100?
Yes, at 0.01 lots or on a cent account. The aim at this size is to learn execution and discipline, not to make a living.
What leverage do I need with $100?
Less than you'd think. 0.01 lots of EUR/USD needs about $36 of margin at 30:1, about $11 at 100:1 and about $1 at 1000:1. High leverage mostly gives you room for mistakes you shouldn't make.
How many trades can I have open?
With $1–3 at risk per trade, two or three at most, so that a bad day costs no more than a few per cent.
Which brokers suit a $100 account?
Brokers with low minimums: XM Global ($5), Titan FX Zero Micro (no minimum), XS.com and FXGT (no minimum on some accounts). A cent account helps further.
