Islamic Swap-Free Forex Accounts: How They Work
An Islamic (swap-free) account removes the overnight swap, the interest-based charge or credit for holding a position past the daily rollover. Brokers replace it in other ways: an administration fee after a set number of days, wider spreads, or limits on which instruments and strategies qualify. Some brokers make every account swap-free; others require you to request it. Whether trading itself is permissible is a religious question we don't answer: ask a scholar you trust.
What swap is, and what a swap-free account removes
When you hold a forex position past the daily rollover, the broker charges or pays swap, based on the interest-rate difference between the two currencies. Our swap guide explains how it’s calculated. A swap-free (Islamic) account removes that interest charge or credit so that a position can stay open overnight without interest changing hands.
How brokers replace swap
| Approach | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Admin fee after a grace period | No charge for the first few nights, then a fixed fee per lot per night |
| Wider spreads | You pay more on each trade instead of overnight |
| Instrument limits | Some exotics, indices or crypto still carry overnight charges |
| Strategy limits | Brokers can remove swap-free status if they see carry-trade or swap arbitrage |
Read the broker’s swap-free terms for your account. A “swap-free” label on a homepage doesn’t tell you which of these apply.

The full table with notes is on our swap-free broker comparison. Two brokers popular in Southeast Asia: Octa markets all its accounts as swap-free, and FBS offers Islamic accounts.
Before you open one
- Check eligibility. Some brokers require a declaration or limit Islamic accounts by country.
- Read the fee schedule for positions held more than a few days.
- Check your instruments. Gold, indices and crypto can have different rules from forex.
- Keep the regulator in mind. A swap-free account doesn’t change the broker’s licence: see licence tiers explained.
The religious question
Scholars differ on whether leveraged forex and CFD trading is permissible, even without swap, because of issues such as leverage, delayed settlement and speculation. Broker Atlas doesn’t give religious rulings. If this matters to you, ask a scholar you trust before you trade.
