Pip Value Calculator

Updated 31 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Guides Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

Pip value = pip size × units, converted into dollars. For pairs quoted in USD (EUR/USD, GBP/USD) it's a fixed $10 per pip per standard lot. For USD/JPY it's ¥1,000 per lot divided by the rate: 45 pips on 1 lot at 150.00 is $300. For gold this calculator treats $0.10 as one pip, so 1 lot moves $10 per pip.

Profit / loss—

Results are estimates; actual terms vary by broker and account.

How to use it

  • Pair: USD/JPY, EUR/USD, GBP/USD or XAU/USD.
  • Lots: your volume. 1.00 = 100,000 units of currency or 100 oz of gold.
  • Move (pips): the distance you’re pricing: a stop, a target or a spread. On yen pairs a pip is 0.01, on EUR/USD and GBP/USD 0.0001.
  • Price: the current rate. It’s used only for USD/JPY, to convert yen into dollars.

The formula

Instrument Value of the move in USD
EUR/USD, GBP/USD 10 × lots × pips
USD/JPY 100,000 × lots × 0.01 ÷ price × pips
XAU/USD 100 × lots × 0.1 × pips

The full derivation, including crosses such as EUR/GBP that aren’t in the calculator, is in what is a pip.

Worked examples

Example 1: USD/JPY. 1 lot, a 45-pip move, rate 150.00. 100,000 × 1 × 0.01 = ¥1,000 per pip; ÷ 150 = $6.67 per pip; × 45 = $300.

Example 2: gold. 0.2 lots, a 150-pip move ($15 from 2,400.00 to 2,415.00 or back). 100 × 0.2 × 0.1 × 150 = $300.

Also try EUR/USD, 0.5 lots, 30 pips: 10 × 0.5 × 30 = $150.

Pip value at a glance

Lots EUR/USD, GBP/USD USD/JPY at 150.00 Gold ($0.10 pip)
0.01 $0.10 $0.067 $0.10
0.10 $1.00 $0.67 $1.00
1.00 $10.00 $6.67 $10.00

To check how your broker quotes a symbol, open its Specification in MT4/MT5 (right-click in Market Watch). “Digits” tells you how many decimals the price has: 5 for EUR/USD and 3 for USD/JPY means the last digit is a pipette, a tenth of a pip. “Contract size” tells you how many units one lot is. If either differs from the table above, the calculator’s figures won’t match your account.

Reading the result

The result is the profit or loss for that move, before costs. Uses:

  • Stop-loss in money. Enter your stop distance to see what a losing trade costs. To go the other way, from a money limit to a lot size, use the lot size calculator or the position size calculator.
  • Spread cost. Enter the spread in pips: a 1.2-pip spread on 1 lot of EUR/USD is $12 per trade. Compare published figures on the spread comparison.
  • Rebates. Cashback is usually quoted per lot; compare it with the spread cost using the rebate calculator.

Limits

  • USD/JPY’s pip value moves with the rate. At 140.00 a pip on 1 lot is about $7.14; at 160.00, $6.25. The calculator uses the price you enter.
  • Contract sizes vary. Cent and micro accounts and some gold contracts use smaller sizes. Check the symbol specification in MT4/MT5 before relying on the figure.
  • Costs and swap aren’t included. For the full result of a trade, use the profit calculator; for overnight financing, the swap calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the price box only matter for USD/JPY?

Because a USD/JPY pip is a fixed amount of yen (¥1,000 per lot), which has to be converted into dollars at the current rate. For EUR/USD and GBP/USD the pip is already in dollars.

What is a pip on gold?

It isn't standardised. This calculator uses $0.10, as many MT4/MT5 traders do; some brokers and tools use $0.01. A $1 move on 1 lot (100 oz) is $100 either way.

How many pips is 1.0850 to 1.0880?

30 pips. On non-yen pairs the fourth decimal is the pip; the fifth is a pipette, a tenth of a pip.

Can I use this for my account in euros or yen?

The result is in US dollars. Convert it at your broker's rate, or read the value in MT4/MT5's trade window, which shows profit in your account currency.
