Forex Swap Calculator
Swap = swap rate in points × value of one point per lot × lots × nights. One point is worth about $1 per lot on EUR/USD, GBP/USD and gold, and ¥100 per lot on USD/JPY (converted at the rate). A long USD/JPY lot at +12 points for 7 nights at 150.00 earns $56. Take the swap rate from the symbol's specification in MT4/MT5; count the triple-swap night as three.
How to use it
- Pair: USD/JPY, EUR/USD, GBP/USD or gold.
- Lots: your position size.
- Swap (points): the swap long figure if you’re buying, swap short if selling, from the symbol specification in MT4/MT5. Negative means you pay.
- Nights held: how many rollovers the trade passes. Count the triple-swap night as 3. A trade held Monday to the next Monday passes 7 nights if Wednesday is the triple day (Mon, Tue, Wed×3, Thu, Fri).
- Price: the current rate, used only for USD/JPY to turn yen into dollars.
The formula
Swap (USD) = points × value of one point per lot × lots × nights
| Instrument | One point | Value of one point per lot |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD, GBP/USD | 0.00001 | $1 |
| XAU/USD (100 oz, 2 decimals) | 0.01 | $1 |
| USD/JPY | 0.001 | ¥100 = 100 ÷ price, in USD |
These are the standard sizes for 5-digit currency quotes, 3-digit yen quotes and 2-decimal gold. If your broker quotes with fewer digits, one “point” is bigger: check the specification’s digits field.
Worked examples
Example 1: earning swap on USD/JPY. Buy 1 lot, swap long +12 points, held 7 nights, rate 150.00. 12 × (100 ÷ 150) × 1 × 7 = $56 (≈ ¥8,400).
Example 2: paying swap on EUR/USD. 2 lots, swap −8.5 points, held 10 nights. −8.5 × 1 × 2 × 10 = −$170.
The rates here are illustrative. Real swap rates change often, sometimes weekly, and differ by broker and account type.
Swap in pips
To compare swap with your target, convert it into pips: divide by pip value × lots. In Example 2, 2 lots of EUR/USD are worth $20 a pip, so −$170 of swap is 8.5 pips the trade has to make before it breaks even on financing alone. In Example 1, the +$56 is worth about 8.4 pips on 1 lot of USD/JPY at 150.00 ($6.67 a pip). The pip value calculator gives the pip value for other sizes.
What the result means
Swap is the financing of holding a position overnight: roughly the interest-rate difference between the two currencies, minus (or plus) the broker’s markup. It’s added to or taken from your balance at each rollover, normally around the server’s day change. Over days or weeks it can outweigh the spread, which is why it matters most to swing traders, carry trades and anyone holding gold.
What the calculator doesn’t cover:
- Rate changes during the trade. Brokers update swap rates as interest rates and their own costs move.
- Holidays. Extra financing can be charged around bank holidays.
- Swap-free accounts. Some brokers offer accounts with no swap, sometimes with an admin fee instead after a number of days. See swap-free brokers.
- Other instruments. Indices, oil and crypto CFDs often use percentage-based financing.
How swap is set, and why it’s sometimes negative both ways, is covered in forex swap and rollover explained. For gold, where swap is often a significant cost, read the gold trading guide. To see the full result of a trade before swap, use the profit calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the swap rate?
In MT4/MT5, right-click the symbol in Market Watch and choose Specification. It shows swap long, swap short, the swap type and, in MT5, the day the triple swap is charged.
Why is swap charged three times on one night?
To cover the weekend. Spot currency trades settle two business days later, so a position held over one particular night carries the weekend's financing. Many servers charge it on Wednesday night, but check the specification.
Why is swap negative on both buy and sell?
Because the broker adds its own markup to the interest-rate difference. When rates in the two currencies are close, the markup can make both sides a cost.
What if my broker quotes swap in money or as a percentage?
This calculator expects points. If the specification shows another swap type, convert first or read the actual charge from your trade history.
