Crypto CFD Trading: Leverage, Spreads and Weekend Rules

Updated 30 October 2026 · Written by Broker Atlas Guides Desk · Data checked by Broker Atlas Data Desk

Short answer

A crypto CFD lets you trade the price of Bitcoin or other coins without owning them, long or short, with leverage. Offshore leverage on crypto is much lower than on forex (Titan FX fixes BTC/USD at 100:1; BigBoss lists 50:1) and spreads and overnight financing are high. Many brokers quote crypto at weekends, when liquidity is thin. EU retail clients are capped at 2:1.

How a crypto CFD differs from buying coins

Crypto CFD Buying on an exchange
Ownership None; price contract You own the coins
Short selling Yes Limited
Leverage Yes Usually none (spot)
Overnight cost Financing charge None to hold
Withdraw coins No Yes
Counterparty Your broker The exchange / your wallet

Leverage: lower than you might expect

Even high-leverage brokers set crypto apart:

  • Titan FX: BTC/USD fixed at 100:1 on all accounts.
  • BigBoss: crypto CFDs 50:1 fixed on at least one account.
  • EU retail: 2:1 under ESMA’s measures.

Example. BTC at $60,000 (illustrative), contract 1 BTC. At 100:1 margin is $600. A 3% move, common in a day for Bitcoin, is $1,800. On a $1,000 account that’s beyond the whole balance. 0.01 BTC risks $18 on the same move: a more realistic size. Check contract size in the specification (lot sizes).

Spreads and financing

  • Spreads on crypto are wide and quoted in dollars. They widen further at weekends and during sharp moves.
  • Financing (swap) is often several times higher than on FX, and may be charged daily including weekends. A multi-week hold can cost more than the spread. See swap.

Weekend rules

Many brokers quote crypto 24/7, but:

  • liquidity is thin, so spreads widen and stops can slip;
  • margin requirements may rise over the weekend at some brokers;
  • maintenance windows can pause trading briefly.

Negative balance protection matters here: see zero-cut explained.
