Trading US Stock CFDs With an Offshore Broker
A US stock CFD lets you trade the price of shares like Apple or Nvidia, long or short, with leverage, but you don't own the shares: no voting rights, and dividends come as cash adjustments. Offshore brokers usually allow much lower leverage on stocks than on FX (BigBoss lists 20:1), trade only during US market hours, and charge financing overnight. EU retail clients are capped at 5:1.
CFD vs owning the shares
| Stock CFD | Real shares | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | No | Yes |
| Short selling | Yes | Needs a margin account |
| Leverage | Yes | Usually none or low |
| Dividends | Cash adjustment | Paid to you |
| Overnight cost | Daily financing | None |
| If the broker fails | Unsecured claim (offshore) | Usually held by a custodian |
That last row matters: for long-term investing in shares, a regulated stockbroker is the safer structure. CFDs suit short- to medium-term trading. More on what happens in a failure: broker bankruptcy.
Worked example
Illustrative: a share at $200; contract 1 share per lot.
- 10 lots = 10 shares = $2,000 position.
- Margin at 20:1: $100. At 5:1 (EU retail): $400.
- Results come out at the US cash open: the share gaps 6%. That’s $120 on 10 shares, either way.
- Financing on a $2,000 long for 30 nights at an illustrative 7% annual rate ≈ $11.50.
Contract sizes and financing rates vary by broker; check the specification.
Rules that differ from forex
- Trading hours. Usually US cash hours only. No trading outside them means positions can’t be closed overnight; gaps hit at the open.
- Earnings. Single stocks gap on results far more than indices or FX.
- Corporate actions. Splits, dividends and mergers trigger position adjustments.
- Short restrictions. Brokers can stop shorting hard-to-borrow stocks.
- Leverage. Fixed and low, regardless of the account maximum.

- Start with the index first if you’re new: index CFDs are less exposed to single-company news.
- Size from your stop-loss, not your leverage (risk management).

Frequently asked questions
Do I own the shares with a stock CFD?
No. You hold a contract with the broker on the share price. XM Global's Shares account is an exception in that it's for buying actual company shares, with a $10,000 minimum deposit.
When can I trade US stock CFDs?
Generally during US market hours. Some brokers offer limited pre- or post-market trading. Check the trading hours in the contract specification.
Do I get dividends?
Long positions usually receive a cash adjustment on the ex-dividend date and short positions pay one.
What leverage can I use on stocks?
Much lower than on forex. BigBoss lists 20:1 fixed on stock CFDs on at least one account; EU rules cap retail clients at 5:1.
