Forex Profit Calculator
Profit = (close − open) × contract size × lots, reversed for a sell, then converted into dollars. On EUR/USD and gold the result is already in dollars; on USD/JPY it's in yen and is divided by the closing rate. Buying 1 lot of USD/JPY at 150.00 and closing at 151.00 makes ¥100,000, or $662.25. Spread, commission and swap aren't included.
How to use it
- Pair: USD/JPY, EUR/USD, GBP/USD or gold.
- Direction: Buy or Sell.
- Lots: the volume you’re closing.
- Open price and Close price: from the trade’s line in MT4/MT5’s Trade or History tab. To plan a trade, use your entry and your target or stop.
The formula
| Instrument | Profit or loss in USD |
|---|---|
| EUR/USD, GBP/USD | (close − open) × 100,000 × lots |
| XAU/USD | (close − open) × 100 × lots |
| USD/JPY | (close − open) × 100,000 × lots ÷ close, in USD; the yen figure is (close − open) × 100,000 × lots |
For a sell, the calculator uses (open − close) instead.
Worked examples
Example 1: USD/JPY buy. 1 lot, open 150.00, close 151.00. (151 − 150) × 100,000 × 1 = ¥100,000. ÷ 151 = $662.25.
Example 2: EUR/USD sell that went wrong. Sell 0.3 lots at 1.0850, close at 1.0910. (1.0850 − 1.0910) × 100,000 × 0.3 = −$180: a 60-pip move against you at $3 a pip.
And for gold: buy 0.1 lots at 2,400.00, close 2,425.50: 25.50 × 100 × 0.1 = $255.
What the result means
The result is the gross result of the price move. Your account shows the net figure after:
- Spread: if you entered mid prices, subtract spread in pips × pip value. On the example above, a 1.0-pip EUR/USD spread on 0.3 lots costs $3.
- Commission: on ECN or raw-spread accounts, a fixed amount per lot. Brokers publish it on their account-type pages (ECN brokers compared).
- Swap: for positions held overnight, use the swap calculator.
On USD/JPY the dollar result also depends on the rate when the yen are converted into your account currency; MT4/MT5 do this continuously, so the dollar profit of an open trade drifts slightly even if the price stands still.
Using it before you trade
A quick plan for a EUR/USD buy of 0.2 lots at 1.0850, stop 1.0825, target 1.0900:
| Open | Close | Result | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop hit | 1.0850 | 1.0825 | −$50 |
| Target hit | 1.0850 | 1.0900 | +$100 |
That’s a 1:2 risk-to-reward: the trade needs to win more than one time in three to break even before costs. Running both rows through the calculator takes seconds and shows whether the size fits your limits.
More generally, enter your entry and stop to see the loss if the stop is hit, then your entry and target to see the gain. If the loss is more than you’re willing to lose, reduce the size: the position size calculator finds the right one. For a quick pip-based estimate, the pip value calculator is faster.
Remember that leveraged losses can exceed your deposit if prices gap. Whether your broker resets a negative balance is covered in negative balance protection explained. Pips, lots and spread are explained in what is a pip and what is spread.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my USD/JPY profit in dollars less than ¥100,000 ÷ 150?
Because the calculator converts at the closing rate (151.00), as the profit is realised in yen when you close. ¥100,000 ÷ 151 = $662.25.
Does the calculator include the spread?
No. Enter the prices you'd actually get (buy at the ask, sell at the bid) and the spread is included; otherwise subtract it separately.
How do I calculate profit on a sell?
Choose Sell. The calculator flips the sign, so a sell from 1.0850 to 1.0910 shows a loss.
Can I use it for partial closes?
Yes: enter only the lots you're closing.
